The Last Dance (A Flash Fiction)

June 16, 2017 0
The last Dance a flash fiction

Clara tapped on the play button in her IPhone 6 music interface and the soft melodious mambo came on, filling the entire air with Romance. She tried to stand on her toe with her left leg and kick the right leg to the back, intending to spread her hands afterwards like a ballet would often do but then, she wasn't a ballet and she couldn't possibly stand on her toes. She had been at it for 2 days now but to her, it felt like ages.
She knew how to dance and rock her body whichever way she wanted to but she also wanted to learn a new way to dance. It meant nothing to her but she thought it meant a lot to Jason. Her newly found prince charming. Two days of breaking her toe nail and nearly cracking her leg bones in an effort to learn a new way to please him.

She hadn't been long in her new neighborhood when she met him. She had accompanied her elder brother to buy bread for breakfast at a nearby store. It was quite easy. Go to the store, make your order over the counter, grab your loaf of bread, pay and go home. It was going to be just like that if Patrick hadn't seen a pretty girl he fell in love with at first sight, like he always did each time he saw a pretty girl and it was all the time. Her company was to make him bring the bread home quicker but it hardly helped.

He had left her standing there and walked over to the girl. Things moved so fast, he told her he was going to walk just a few distance with the new girl and come back for her. He didn't keep the promise and she had to go looking for him. She was new to the neighborhood and everything was new to her, she didn't have a difficult time getting lost. She just did it before it even occurred to her that she might get lost. She had no phone on her and communication wasn't anyway near. She did a bit of roaming and when she got tired, she stood at a point and had gasped out a 'damn you Patrick'. She had gotten a reply almost immediately. Only that the voice wasn't that of her 20 year old brother. It sounded younger and she had thought it was better. She had turned to the voice and she couldn't quite forget the tingle that ran down her spine the moment her face accosted that of Jason Okafor. Jason too never really forgot the way his heart had trippled its beat the moment he set eyes on her. The shock expression on her beautiful innocent face, the way her eyes blinked rapidly and how her lashes flapped like the wings of a beautiful bird. Her breast standing firm and shooting their tops out of the neck of her pink blouse. Her rich black low cut hair and her light skin all got to him in a way he could never explain. Her pink little mouth struck him sick with wanting to kiss her right there. He had to shake himself out of his day dream and repeat his question..

"I asked if you were lost," he had repeated, snapping her out of her awestruck moment. She took in his shinning chocolate complexion, his bushy eyebrows and smiling eyes with one look and fell in love with them. She heard the question but had never believed how difficult it could be to give out a simple answer.
"No, I mean yes I am lost," she had stammered difficultly and he iced her nervousness with a smile that froze her pounding heart.
"Its okay, what's your number?" he had asked and she had hushed herself from spilling out her mobile number to him. She had to be sure he was asking for it, she had fallen helplessly but nevertheless, she wouldn't want to appear so.
"What?" she had asked and he threw her a new style of smile that was even more effective than the first.
"I meant, what's your house number?"
"Oh, 39," she replied with a blush.

He had walked her to their new house that day. He left her at their gate, taking with him, her name and mobile number, her heart too and leaving her with his name and a promise to come and pick her in the evening, to show her the rest of the neighborhood.

She had ran into the house, her heart leaping to the promise of what might be her first love story. She only remembered she was out with Patrick when he met him in their sitting room, smiling mischievously at her while her parents eyed her with anger in their various eyes. She was roasted for being the bad one and Patrick the dutiful one. She didn't complain or try to. She was just to excited to do that. She was 18 and felt something heavy and interesting was coming her way.

The evening of that eventful day was the next big thing in her life after her secondary school graduation party. He had held her hand and walked her all through the neighborhood and showed her the places she should know ordinarily. And when he introduced her to his friends as his love at first sight without her permission, she was way over herself with excitement which she tried so hard to conceal but her pretty eyes had to just show it.
None of them tried to deny that she was beautiful. She looked like a Sunday creation and it was very easy to fall for her. All she had to was blink twice and you are on your knees, begging for mercy. A smile from her would freeze any heart.
They had asked if she could dance and Jason shook his head. Saying they hadn't tried. The rest of the evening was the best of all the evenings in her life and when he had kissed her on the lips for a goodnight, her whole body woke with a kind of desire she had never felt before.

Now, she would have to learn every single dance step the world had ever known and she would unleash them on him. She stood before her mirror, twerking to the next hip hop song that had come up on her phone. Her figure was sexy and it wasn't so hard to make a dance out of it or to make her curved out backside shake. Her waist was elastic in a sort and moving it wasn't so hard for her. She could dance and she was going to show it to Jason.

"Oh my, you are so beautiful," He murmured as she let him hug her. She knew from the way she had admired herself in her mirror and the sleek pink gown that hugged her body, she just knew that she was beautiful in it but she was worried she wouldn't be beautiful enough for him and when he made that comment, she was thrilled. She buried herself deep into his arms and closed her eyes. Her body spelt the word 'PEACE' out and she was in love. He led her through the richly furnished sitting room to the stairs. He laid back on the handrails and brought her closer, sealing her trembling mouth shut with his lips. She wound her arms round his neck and he slid his down to her well defined hips and they kissed like they just discovered it, both their eyes shut and struggling for each other's lips. When they ran out of breath, he lifted her off the ground and took her upstairs to his room. He gently laid her on the cosy mattress and ran to his fridge.

"I don't want anything, just come here," she ordered. He obeyed and shut the fridge. He fell into her waiting arms and they smooched on the soft mattress, the air filled with sweet flavors from the air refresher he had just bought added a spice to their Romance. She would forever reminisce of that moment every time she heard that scent.
"Let's dance," she had asked him amidst the kisses and he stopped. He looked her in the eyes with a smile at the corner of his mouth.
"Really, you want to dance?" he asked and she nodded. She didn't wait for him to speak again, she stood from the bed, feverish with excitement and ran to the sound system in the room. She flicked it on and the room was drowned in sweet melodies, one that got to her brain. She pulled him from the bed and fell into his arms. The held each other and swayed slowly to the rhythm of the song. For the over three minutes the song played, they both shut their eyes and danced slowly to it, loving every drop of it. And then the track ended and she stopped.

"Is that all?" he asked and she shook her head. She was going to show him more. She changed the song to a loud hip hop and backed him. She rubbed her backside against his crotch and made it jiggle independently without even making much movement. His body tensed and he felt the sensation envelope him, he closed his eyes and bit his lips lightly. The bass speakers throbbed and her buttocks flowed to its rhythm, hitting him hard in the crotch and raising more sensations. She turned to face him and dropped her hand on his shoulder, pulling him closer to her. They stood chest to chest as he felt her firm nipples burning against his chest. She danced to a stoop and stood with equal agility, brushing him hard with her rock hard breasts. He grabbed her by the bum and caught her lips with his. He kissed her out of breath and took her to bed, she let him.
"I am a virgin," she declared amidst the excitement and saw the fire in his eyes die slowly. He stopped his advances and knelt on the bed, staring down at her. He never thought of it, she had rocked him so perfectly well, something that not all virgins could do.
"Really?" he had managed to ask. She nodded slightly and held his hand.
"Not that I don't want you to do it, I'm just scared of the pain," she confessed with an innocent look he had never seen before. It made him weak and his desire for her only peaked. He collapsed beside her and together they stared up at the ceiling, following the rotation of the ceiling fan with their eyes.
"I love you," she murmured and snuggled closer to him. He held her and kissed her forehead.
"I love you too," he whispered into her ear. She grabbed him with excitement and kissed him deeply.

"Let's do it," she said, locking his eyes with hers. He bit his lips and pulled her down to his chest.
"Are you sure?" he had asked and she nodded. He had helped her undress, running his fingers through her smooth skin, etching into her body, a tingling sensation that made her close her eyes. He stripped down to his inner wear and lay on her naked body, kissing her lips and rubbing his skin against hers. He went into her slowly while she savored the pain and the pleasure. She tried to shut out the pain but it seemed impossible as the pain grew for every inch deep he went in.
"Wait," she moaned and opened her eyes. He stopped and propped himself up with his elbow.
"Let me climb you, that way I can move at my own pace and it will help me control the pain."
He obliged her and they switched position. She mounted him and moved slowly but steady. They both shut their eyes as she damned the pain and rode him faster, oblivious of the blood that tickled out of her wet vulva.

He kissed her over and over again as she shyed away from his passionate gazes.
"Do you hate me?" he had asked and she shot her beautiful eyes at him.
"Why would I hate you?"
"Because of this," he said, referring to their act of intimacy.
"I love you more now," she whispered and got showered with bouts of kisses from him.

He walked her home, his hand gripping hers as they strolled. The sun was running down west at 5:30 pm. He would rub her hand gently each time and she would let out a soft laughter. She was in love and fulfilled.
They met his friends where they always meet. They had watched them approaching, hand in hand and in love. Her face was bright like the mid morning sun and they had all liked the way she looked.

"Hello guys," he had greeted and shook their hands one after the other. They each threw her a hello and a flirty look. She blushed and grabbed his hand more.
"Did you guys dance?" one of his friends asked and he nodded. She smiled shyly.
"Was she good?"
"She was brilliant and sweet and she was the best too," he announced and everyone threw her a look. They had each wanted her.
They left them and walked on to her house. They stood some meters away from the entrance and faced each other.
"I love you a million folds," he confessed and she giggled. He saw the innocence in her eyes and loved her more. She was a sweet beautiful girl. He completed the confession with a kiss which was interrupted by Patrick.
"You two have tried, you can now go home while I escort her inside," he said and grabbed her hand. He bade her goodnight and flew her a kiss, one that she returned with her lips and her eyes. Away from the prying eyes of her elder brother.

She woke very late the next day all excited with the thrill of a new love, one totally different from the ones she had been involved in during her secondary school days. She went through her phone and found his message waiting unread.

"Good morning beautiful, how was your night? I miss you here already."
She smiled and texted him back.
"My night was warm with the thought of you. I miss you more."

She dragged herself up from the bed and into her bathroom, cleaned up and came out. She had just changed to her blue gown when her brother badged into her room without a knock.
"Dad wants to see you right now," he announced in a way that made her blood rush. She assumed she was in trouble and paused on reprimanding Patrick for walking into her room like that.
"Do you know why?" she asked with her heart in her mouth.
"Not really but I think he saw you with your pretty boy yesterday."
He saw the fear hover over her pretty face and shook his head.
"You had better hurry up and see him, I don't understand his mood this morning."

She said a little prayer in her mind and walked down the stairs to the parlor where her father stood, obviously waiting for her.
"Dad?" she called slowly, he turned to her with a little frown on his face.
"Good morning sir," she greeted and he nodded.
"How are you dear?"
"I am fine sir," she replied and relaxed. She was glad he added a dear to that.
"Where is Patrick? Thought I told him to come and get me something?" he asked, looking up the stairs. It then dawned on her that she had fallen to another of her brother's many tricks. She moved back and made to run up the stairs.
"I will call him," she said.
"Don't worry, maybe you can even do it better than him," he called her back and she stopped, a trifle disappointed.
"It's just some drugs, I think I saw a chemist shop down the road yesterday. It's not that far."

She ran up the stair with the money for the drugs and ran into her brother's room. She met him brushing his Jean trouser.
"For your mind you are smart abi?" she asked and he grinned in reply.
"I don't have the time to be looking for any chemist shop. I'v got a date."
"With who? That girl?" she asked.
"Which girl?" he asked with a frown.
"How many girls do the two of us know here? The one you left me for the other day. The cute girl one."
"Oh, not her. This new girl, she's cuter than that one and she's invited me for a dance," he said with a wide grin.
"It's like all they do here is dance," she murmured.
"Have you danced with your pretty boy?" he asked and pulled his black body hug polo from the wardrobe.
"Yea, yesterday. I wonder what's so special about it," she murmured. Patrick let out a scoff.
"Did he dance good?" he asked.
"Maybe but I rocked him hard. You should have seen me," she said excitedly. Patrick sat on the bed and broke into a laugh.
"What's funny?" she asked.
"Nothing really, I thought you were a virgin?"
"What has that got to do with dancing?" she asked, looking at his naughty brother. He stood up from the bed and pulled his bedside drawer.
"You are too naive for my liking," he said and picked a condom from the drawer. "You shouldn't be like that when you have someone like me around. You are very beautiful and shouldn't let this guys play with you."
"Patrick what type of dance do you do with a condom?" she asked, staring at the shinning sachet in his hands and not wanting to discuss her affairs with her randy brother.

"See why I said you were naive. A dance in this neighborhood is not the regular dance you know in our former neighborhood," he explained. It was then that she understood the whole dance thing. She then understood why he had asked her that question, "Really, you want to dance." she came to understand why he was more in a hurry to get her to bed than he was to switch on the stereo.

She ran out of the room and into the street, blind with rage. She had been played, that was how she saw it all. Her flip-flops clapped on the asphalt as she made her way over to his house. She was mad as it was.

She met him halfway to their house. He was with two of his friends. Maybe he was telling them about the dance, she thought. Just maybe.
"Sweetheart," he called on seeing her. She ignored him and gave him a light shove on the chest, ignoring those around him.

"What was that dance you and your silly friends were always blabbing about, huh?" she yelled and he thought she looked even more appealing as she was angry.
"Baby, what are you talking about?" he asked, confused and shocked with the way she had pushed him.
"Do not baby me you slimy bastard. So that was the dance and it was all you had cared about right?" she asked, getting madder by the second.
"Sweetheart, if only you could calm down and make me understand," he pleaded, trying to hold her hands. She slipped them away and landed him a slap on the cheek. He flinched and the boys around bit their lips.
"I don't want to ever see you again!" she yelled and walked out on him while he watched helplessly.

"She slapped you and you let her go like that?" one of the guys said.
"Shut up," he blasted him and walked out on them.

He spent the rest of the day blowing up her phone and having her cut it each time. She spent her own rest of the day, crying and getting angry at everything, her own naivety inclusive. She was mad at the way she had smiled when he praised her in front of his friends for being a good dancer. If only she had known what they meant by dancing. Most of all, she was sad that she was going to let him go. She loved him despite what he had done.

Patrick barged into her room like he always did, without knocking. She hid her face from him. She didn't want him to know that she had been crying.
"Your pretty boy is asking for you downstairs," he announced and turned to leave.
"I don't want to see him," she muttered and sniffed. He observed the tear in her voice and turned to her.
"What is wrong?" he asked.
"Nothing, tell him to go, I don't want to see him."
He crept into her bed and pulled her to himself against her protests.
"Did he do something to upset you?" he asked. She shook her head and her anger transfered to him. How could he not have noticed her countenance when he started the dance thing in the morning?
"Was it that dance?" he asked all of a sudden and she kept mute, burying her head in his chest.

"Oh, poor you, you thought the dance was just dance? And now you think he used you?" he asked and she found herself nodding against her will. Patrick was her only brother and her only confidant too.
"I think he loves you, everybody loves you and I doubt if he would have wanted to use you against your wish," he said and it made her feel better to assume that he actually loved her and not the dance. Then Patrick capped it with his usual jerky trait.

"Go and meet him there. Dad will soon be back and meet him there. Then you will cry the real cry."
He pulled her up and wiped her face. He let her walk out to him alone. Since she was already dancing, then she is old enough to handle her own problems, he thought.

She met him outside their gate. She felt an urge to run into his arms and stay there for the rest of the evening.
"Just go, leave me alone," she found herself saying.
"I am sorry Clara. I care about you and not that stupid dance of a thing," he confessed.
"Stop calling it a dance because it's not. You deceived me and bragged to your friends about it. I hate you so much."
He stared at her lacking the words to express himself. He loved her and wouldn't have slept with her if she hadn't wanted it but he was ready to take the blames.

"Just go and don't come looking for me again," she said with a tone of finality and walked into the house ignoring his calls.

The next fears days were spent by them trying to heal their hearts. She wanted to get back at him someway, to make him feel the hurt she felt. They never got to see each other again for a while until she had walked out one afternoon to get tomatoes for her mother. He was with his friend and one other girl. The girl was with his friend obviously. Her heart missed a beat when he saw his handsome face approaching from the other end. Jason's heart had skipped also when he saw her. She looked more beautiful than ever. He was going to smile at her if they got closer but she had deliberately avoided his eyes and locked it on his friend.

"Clara," Evans called her and she smiled at him. With the corner of her eyes, she watched the shadow pass over Jason's eyes. It thrilled her a bit.
"How are you Evans? Are you going to dance?" she had asked, shocking Jason and bringing up an uneasy smile from Evans. She only smiled back and trotted away.

She got a call from Jason an hour later. He begged over and over again. She was so beautiful that he didn't want to let go. She dropped the call on him, a thing that killed him. He lay on his bed mourning his loss and being angry at her for being so mean. He heard a knock on his door and barked a come in. The door opened slowly and he watched her come in, thrilled and his heart hammering at the same time. He jumped from his bed and sat up.

"Clara?" he called. She walked up to him on the bed and sat beside him.
"I am really sorry for everything," he started and she hushed him.
"Can we dance again?" she asked.
"Yes, I have a new music in my phone and I know a dance," he said excitedly.
"Shut up, I was talking about the other dance. I want it," she said and kissed him. He felt feverish with passion and held onto her.
"I love you so much," he muttered.
"I love you too."
He pulled off his top and held her. She stopped him.
"But on one condition," she said.
"What condition?"
"It will be the last one."
He nodded with a cute smile that made her heart throb.
"Let's have our last dance, one that will keep us together forever."

"I killed them all," he said to Oscar and he nodded.
"Everyone?"
He shook his head and murmured, "Something like that."
"August, what do you mean something like that? You killed that policeman right?"
"Yea, He was first."
"So I assume it was the girl you left, right?"
He nodded and let out a breath. Oscar searched him with his eyes.
"You love her?" he asked and he nodded.
"Loved her, not anymore," he replied and it was a cold reply.
"Why?" he pressed further.
"Love is dead for me. Died with Mary. I love nothing anymore."
Oscar watched him and the distance stare in his eyes. He thought the boy was far gone. He understood perfectly well. He was handling guns and shooting them at an age he was supposed to be cuddling to his mother.
August shot him a stare.
"Killing all these people, is that what's going to make me a man? Is that how Joseph became a man?" he asked. Oscar nodded.
"Then I don't want to be a man," he murmured. Oscar stared at him and smiled. He put his arm across and dropped it on his shoulder.

"August, I don't know how they do it out there or anywhere else but here in Mathews, that's how it goes down, it's either you or them and if you die at a young age, you won't grow to be a man. If you can't protect the people you love, boy, you ain't no man and that's what made Joe a man, he protected you all the much he could."
August watched him and felt his icey heart melt. His eyes moistened and he felt a tear drop.
"Before I left, I sat with Janet and I told her I loved her. I meant it then. Today, I stood over her and nearly pulled the trigger," he stopped, sniffed and continued. "Oscar, I don't want to be that kind of man. I want to protect the people I love. I watched them all die and nearly killed one myself. Janet thought I was a demon and I think she thought right."
"Boy, there are things life throw at you sometimes and you are left with no choice. You had a duty to your loved ones that were murdered and that's what you carried out, don't be a sissy now," he said and August stood up. He walked round the worn out cross on a grave, his back against Oscar.

"I had a choice when I held that gun against Janet and I chose not to shoot and I didn't. Do you think Jamie had that chance? Jaycee had a gun and it was either Jamie or him," he turned and stared at him.

"August, he killed Joseph and you killed him. Joseph was only keeping you all safe. You, Jaycee and Maria and Jamie killed him. You killed Jamie for that and that's the end of it. Fucking let it go. You had a duty and you carried it out. Here in St Mathews, your home, it's blood first and if someone fucked with your blood, you fuck him to hell and that's it, you heard me? That's it!" he scolded. August wiped his eyes and nodded. He heard all he needed. Jaime killed his brother and he killed him for it. That was all that mattered. Janet had nothing in it and he was glad he changed his mind about shooting her.

"You said someone wanted to see me?" he asked and Oscar smiled.
"Yes, you will smile again soon."
August scoffed. "Who might that be? My mother or Maria or Mary?"
Oscar shook his head with the smile still on his face.
"Jaycee," he replied like it was a magical name. August stopped and stared at him, his eyes blazing red.
"Don't fuck with me," he said and Oscar shook his head.
"I am not fucking with you bro. Jaycee will be here soon."
He walked the room apprehensively and stood at a spot, sweating and shaking.
"Where the fuck is he now?" he asked.
"Said we should wait here, be patient bro."
August fixed his gaze on Oscar. He wasn't looking at him. He looked past him. His eye moistened and with tears and just when they were going to fall, a smile broke out of his face.

Williams looked round the classy suite located at the pent house of The Meridian Hotels. It was tasty and cozy but he could care less. His mind was beginning to grab a bit of peace as he was so close to perfecting his scheme. He poured one more glass of the tequila and took it to the bed. He sat on it and sipped from the glass. He heard the door open and someone walking towards him. He was too weary to look and rather took another sip from the glass.

"You sold us out for this?"
Jaycee was all grown but Williams could never forget the sound of his voice. He let out a smile and turned on the bed to face him.
"You look better without the beards bro," he said and widened the smile and then switched to that emotionless look they have always had a problem deciphering.
"Don't fuck with me man, you did all these to us, your family because of money?" he asked again, tightening his grip on the trigger as he shoved the gun in his direction. Williams shook his heard a trifle undaunted by the gun being pointed him.
"I don't care about money."
"Than what was it? Power? You hated us? What the fuck made you sell out your bloody family because I can't seem to understand it."
"I never hated you guys, I loved you all more than I can ever begin to explain now. All those years, I had my eyes on you, just trying to look out for you. I'm sorry Joseph and Maria had to die, pops and moms too but certain things takes place in our lives, things we cannot explain, things we have no control over and things you may not have seen yet. Like the force of love," he turned on the bed to face him squarely, Jaycee followed his movement with his gun. "Like Nancy for example, she lost her family for you, everyone she's ever loved and she's still stuck to you. Doesn't that beat you?" he asked.

"No, she only loyal to the ones she loves. Something you have no bloody clue of. While you are shooting up the family that loved you, she is there, protecting them and giving all she has for it."

"And why would she still hang around you when her folks were murdered in her very face because of you? Just why?" he asked and moved his eyes past him, laying it on the door as it creaked open. August walked in slowly followed by Oscar, each clutching to his own gun.

"Jaycee?" August called out slowly. He knew Williams, he could never forget his face and he also knew Jaycee with the hair on his head. Things he would never forget. Oscar let his gun go up and pointed it at Williams while Jaycee turned to behold his little brother once again. His emotions got to him and he let his gun drop to his side. He ran straight to August and scooped him into his arms, almost choking him.

"I thought you died bro. I swear I thought you died," August sobbed and fell back in his arms. He was only a few inches shorter than he was.
"I didn't die, I'm here now and we are going to make them all pay, starting with this sly bastard sitting here," he replied and they turned to face Williams again. He smiled up at August and thought it needless to say how glad he was on seeing him. Even though it would be true, he doubted if they will ever believe him.

"You are grown August, that's great," he said and the smile crept out of his face again.
"What did he have with it all?" August asked Jaycee, ignoring his comment.
"Everything I think. Teamed up with the people that kept coming after us until Joseph and Maria died."
"Then I will shoot him myself," August said and raised his gun. Williams shuddered from the look in his eyes, through them, he saw that he was going to shoot, brotherhood aside.

"Drop them," Stanley called from behind them, an assault rifle in his hand. They turned to him and he waved them a smile.
"A family reunion then but I'm sorry I have to cut you guys short."
"Well, we are here for both your heads," Jaycee said and bit his lower lip.
"Maybe some other time but not today bro. Drop the fucking guns."
Williams looked at him and smiled. "Is he around?" he asked and Stanley nodded.
"We will meet him tomorrow. We need to leave here now."
He stood from the bed and walked past the three boys, straight for the door.
"Some other time folks, and I'm glad to see you again August, really," Williams said and grabbed the door knob.
"And I'd be glad to see your brains on the floor soon," he replied. Williams smiled.

"I'm sorry bro but I hope you do realize I have to kill them," Stanley announced. Only Oscar flinched, the other two just burned with rage.
"I won't let you kill my brothers," Williams said and walked back towards them. Stanley frowned, he wasn't ready for that confrontation but he would kill them all if it ever came to that, Williams inclusive.
"I will do it myself," Williams completed with a smile. Stanley heaved a sigh.
"Then get it done, we need to move out," he said and walked out of the door. Williams pulled his gun from his waist and raised at Oscar first.

"I wish we had met again over a glass of beer as brothers," he smiled and fired six times, everywhere went silent after the sound of the gun, he watched them for a while and shook his head. He walked out of the room and closed the door behind him.
"I have no one left now, better not let your boss fuck me up," he murmured to Stanley as they walked into the elevator.
"Don't worry, very soon, you will have the whole of St Mathews."

"I have no where to go, if I don't die at St Mathews, I will be back here but first, I have unfinished business to settle."
That was all he told Garvey. He had bid him goodbye and had left him with only his bag strapped to his side. He had made his decision between love and duty. A duty he had chosen himself. His family came first, they were connected by blood and the blood ran through every single vein in his body. He had loved Janet when he was with her and when they parted, he loved Mary and had loved her more than he had loved Janet, but Maria, Joseph, Jaycee, nobody came close to his tender heart as they had done. They were his family.

He looked around what was once their home and recollected what was left of the tattered memory of when he was still a child in Maria's hand. Where she would cuddle him and yell at Jaycee for making him shed a tear until he was grown to have Jaycee as his best friend. The memory of him fighting his father over the last piece of meat in his meal and how he always won him over it and how his mother had rocked him to sleep in her arms. The memories all rushed at him at the speed of light. He turned to Oscar and shook his head to rid his eyes off the moist that had gathered in them.

"Do you think that I will ever forget them, that I will ever be normal again?" he asked and Oscar shook his head.
"Such things just doesn't go away like that."
"I have to do what I have to do to keep a little of my sanity. They can't be dead while their killers live," he ran his hand through his hair and looked at Oscar. His eyes scared him.
"Do you have a gun?" he asked and Oscar pulled one out. A .48 and handed it over to him. He walked to the door and covered his head back with a hood.
"When and Where are we meeting again?" Oscar asked.
"Must we meet again? When I'm through, I expect to be in my grave or back at New York," he replied.
"You shouldn't be talking about death now, you are too small for that."
"I've been through things most kids only see on movies. Death is too small compared to those things."
"Well, Someone would love to meet you. Someone you will definitely love to see," Oscar said.
"Who?" he asked.
"Someone very important to you, he wants to keep it a surprise. Just stay alive and you may just smile again."
"Well, I will meet you at the church cemetery by 12am. If I am a second late, then forget about me," he said and turned for the door.
"Don't be late then," Oscar said after him and he nodded, walking out of the door.

August stared at the house from a little distance. Nothing much had changed since he left. He tried to make a picture of what a 14 year old Janet would look like and failed at it. He could only see the little face that had loved him as a child. One that he had loved back. He caressed the glock tucked in his waist and walked briskly to the front of the house, much different from whom he was the last time he was there. He raised his hand to knock and paused. He heard voices inside the house. He could never mistake Jaime's voice and Kate's. The cheerful third voice he placed to be Janet. It was a kind of music to his ear.

He rapped on the door. Three mechanical knocks and waited, not sure of what to expect. He raised his watch and it's luminous hands gave the time as 9:59 pm. The door opened as he dropped his hand to his side again and he stood face to face with a young girl of his age. He wished he could smile but it was not the time for it. It was a different August that had come home.

"August?" Janet called softly, tears gathering round her pretty face. He moved towards her and she moved back to let him in. She fell into his arms in warm embrace and held tightly onto him. He closed his eyes and opened them again and called out her name slowly.
"Janet."
She let him go and moved back to frisk him. She had missed him all those while and never believed he would ever be back home.
He turned and his eyes met Harry's and Kate's staring at him.
"August," Harry called.
"Hello," he replied, shooting him daggers with his eyes. He didn't want to like him a bit, it would make his mission difficult. The room was engulfed with deadly silence for a few seconds.
"You are back, what about Harry?" he asked, observing his cold countenance.
"Dead," he replied.
"What do you mean dead?" Jaime asked, shocked by the answer and the way he had given it.
"He got shot by some guys I pissed, Mary and Jeane too. They are all dead," he informed, fighting back the mist that was growing in his eyes.
"Did you kill them?" Kate asked, her eyes full of hate for the black boy. She had always thought he reeked of evil and bad luck.
"No, some guys that I pissed off."
"And you live?" Jaime asked, Janet stared at the new August she had never known. It scared her at the realization that she may have lost the August that she had loved and waited for.
"No, I merely breath. There is nothing left for me, except the desire to do what I have to do."

They stared at each other in silence for a long time. It wasn't much of a wonderful reunion. He looked at Jaime and bit his lips.
"Jaime, that night at the farm house. My brother Joseph, it was your shot that killed him, right?"
The question dropped on the quiet house like an atomic. It was the last question Jaime had expected from a boy his age, one that he thought he had groomed to overcome the vices that St Mathews had instilled in him. He thought of Harry, he assumed August couldn't be totally innocent.
"August, what happened to Harry?" he asked.
"Same thing that happened to my brothers," he said and took a few steps towards Jaime and Kate. "Maria, Jaycee, Joseph, Jeane, Harry,"  he swallowed hard and called out her name last. "Mary!! They were taken from me and I fucking loved them!" he pulled the gun from his waist and raised it at Jaime. Kate and Janet let out a gasp.
"August don't," Janet begged, walking to where he stood. He never for once moved his eyes from Jaime to look at her. It struck her heart like a bolt.
"You killed my brothers, they were my family and you killed them. Did you think you could ever replace them? You thought you could be my family when you killed them."
He cocked the gun and Jaime moved back.
"You have it all wrong August," Jamie started. "You don't know what they were, you were too young to know,"  he explained.
"No, you are wrong. I know what they were. They were my family. Joseph was only protecting us and Jaycee only cared for me. I saw you shoot him," he sniffed and stretched out his hand. He felt Janet wrap her arm round his free hand. Even then, he never moved his teary eye away from her father.
"August please," she pleaded. He let her hold him for a while and then slipped out of her arms. She moved in between Jaime and the gun.
"Shoot me then, since you are so evil now. Shoot me August," she cried. He looked at her and felt the memories rise. He remembered the love they had shared and how she had always stood up for him. He loved her but he had a duty. For a moment, his hand shook and he thought about the consequences of what he was going to do. He remembered he had like them once, they had taken him in when he had no one. Then the voice echoed in his head.

"Remember who took your brothers from you, they are not your friends, they are not your family, they took  Joseph and one day they have to pay, you have to make them pay!"

He looked at her face one more time, he hated to see her cry. He thought he saw a bit of Mary in her. It deepened his resolute. Mary was killed and so was his family.
"I'm sorry but I have gone COLD!" he moved back and caressed the trigger one final time. He had loved her but she was not his family. He squeezed the trigger, only once. Jaime fell behind her, the picture of him falling brought back more memories of that night at the farm house. How he had watched Maria and Jaycee fall, he felt a kind of rage he had never felt before. He pointed the gun at Kate next and squeezed the trigger again, twice. Janet stood dumbstruck, looking frantically from the corpses of her parents to August, clenching his smoking gun.

"You killed them!" she yelled and ran to him. She tugged at his shirt and shook him violently. She let him go and knelt beside their bodies, shaking from sobs.

He closed his eyes and raised the gun. An image of Maria came into his mind. He caressed the trigger and watched the fear in her eyes, clouded over by tears.
"You must think I'm some demon," he said to her. She sobbed and wiped her nose.
"You are evil and a bloody demon," she cried.
"You can think what ever you want, they are dead, I will let you Live and then you can watch how much your desire to kill me will swell, then you will know why I shot them," he said and turned. She cried out his name and he turned to face her.
"What happened to you? How did you become so evil?"
"I saw the people I loved killed in front of me, many times, over and over again. That was what happened to me. If I was evil, you would be dead too. It was your family for mine Janet."

He left her kneeling there. All of a sudden he felt nothing for her or for anybody. He walked out of the door not regretting what he had done one bit.

We danced and made merry all through the night. James's father let us have a crate of beer to ourselves and we drank it up like fishes. James had this mad home theater in his room and we banged it up with run town's mad over you track. The ladies around were either older than I was or not fine enough for my standard so I just mingled with my bottle of Heineken. I was at it and also shaking my head to the rhythm of music banging away when I felt a light touch on my arm. I turned and Chinemelum stood before me with a plate of steaming jollof rice in her hand. I took it from her and dropped it on the table with a thank you.

"Where are you going?" I asked as she turned to go. She pointed in the direction of the kitchen and I nodded.
"Will you come back?" I asked.
"I don't know."
"Well I want you to come back," I said, flashing her my Mr charming smile. She smiled back.
"I will try."

She left the room brushing James who was already on his way in. He came in and shot daggers at me with his eyes.
"Nothing naa, she only brought me food," I protested.
"Next time, tell me. I will even add more meat for you."

He dropped more chilled beer on the bed and we knocked ourselves out. Real out. Things moved so fast and I soon found myself at the far corner of the fence, in the darkness with Chinemelum. We weren't kissing or smooching as most of you would think. She held a bowl of water while I bent low, vomiting the destiny out of my life. I'v had too many to drink and the consequences hit me like a mark trailer. It was my second time of vomiting that evening and she was there through it all, heaping me with sorry.
I took the bowl from her and washed my face and then rinsed my mouth.
"Thank you," I murmured, staggering to stand erect. She smiled and her dimples showed.
"I would have kissed you but I am afraid I may vomit on you," I said and she smiled again.
"Don't worry, maybe tomorrow."

I assumed the answer was conjured up by the liquor in my blood and sent to my brain because if it wasn't so then it means she would actually allow me kiss her tomorrow. Jeez. Why do girls love me so, or is it because I love them?.
We walked into the house, leaning on each other. She left me at the door to James' room. I pecked her cheek and she smiled. She bade me Goodnight and left. I watched her go and realized How beautiful and innocent she looked. She was the type that I had always loved to kiss and hug but never fuck. She looked too innocent and beautiful to be messed up plus James would poison the next drink he would offer me.
I staggered into the room and James was already snoring his life away. I fell beside him and prayed I don't vomit on him.

I and James lay in the room wasted the next day, staring at the ceiling and trying to kill the headache with soft blues. We brushed around 9 am and fell back into the room. We had no business around, everything was already being taken care of.

"Your sister is fine," I whispered to James all of a sudden.
"I know, everybody knows, even she knows," he replied.
"Well, are you aware that my name and hers sound alike?" I asked.
"So?"
"And she is my exact spec, fair, beautiful and curvy," I said and he turned to look at me.
"So?"
"We could be in laws you know," I suggested.
"You are still drunk," he replied and I laughed.
"So James, you had a treasure like this at home and you didn't even tell me, eh Chibundu?"
He laughed at the way I called his native name.
"Now you know, wetin go come happen? Will you be coming here from Anambra just because of her?"
"No but you can invite her for small holiday at our lodge since you live alone."
"Why don't you invite Amara over then I will invite her."
"I will rather invite my mother than invite Amara," I said. Chinemelum walked in on us. I saw a different side of her beauty, one I couldn't find in her parents. She brought us breakfast on the bed. We were really kinging and the icing on the cake for me was having a queen like her serve me on my bed, James's bed actually.

The wedding mass was for 10 am. Everyone of note left before them, Chinemelum inclusive, to my utter dismay. The house turned up boring so we decided to go to church, if for nothing, at least for photoshoots. So with my red tux, it was a wedding mass so Romance was in the air, my skinny pencil and black Italian shoes toe match, James was on something similar too. It was our uniform sort of. We strolled off to church, it was a walkable distance. The time was 11:30 am when we got there. The priest was already on his way to concluding the entire affair. We both sat at the back of everyone. We had a vantage view of the church and the choir girls mostly.

"See that girl?" James whispered to me, pointing to the direction of the choir girls.
"That one with big boobs?" I asked.
"No, the one on skimpy skirt."
"Hian, all those choir girls are on skimpy skirts naa."
"No, that one with Chinaza's kind of laps."
"James abeg, don't start comparing my Naza with your village girls."
He Pointed the girls out to me and I checked her out. She was cute and dark and fresh like pumpkin.
"Ehe? What about her?"
"She go fit you," he told me.
"I know but I only do dark girls who are exceptional," I said.
"She is exceptional."
"How?"
"She will save you from me."
"Which kind saving?" I asked, switching stares between him and the girl.
"You need saving from me because I will poison you if you try any rubbish with Chinemelum. Just take that girl in her place," he said. He wasn't smiling but I can tell when James was joking. He was joking shaa. But then the girl looked cute though and from where she was sitting, I could tell she had that potential of being very curvy. I imagined myself hitting it off with the girl after the wedding mass and going home to a savory Chinemelum. I loved the idea and it was worth risking James's poison.

"Will you introduce me to her?" I asked.
"Sure, only if you promise not to look at Chinemelum twice again."
"I swear."
"Swear with your life," he said and I shot my eyes at him.
"Haba guy, easy naa, like say those other girls you dy tidy are not people's Junior sister."
"I know what I am doing. You that is always doing magic with girls, I don't want you to do magic with her."
"I cannot swear with my life abeg, what if we get drunk again and something happens? I can't swear abeg."
"Then I will poison you."

Fast forward to the wedding photoshoot. I was all over Chinemelum. Our hands on each other as the flashes came. We had a groupie, We had our personal, one which James was dictating to us where to hold each other. If he had his way, we would have been taking the pictures at a perfect 10m distance between us. And we had the one which James stood in between us. It was as fun as fun can get. Their entourage drove home while I walked with James, just as we had come. I made sure the girls around had enough reason to ogle at me and they did.

Into the house and the reception started. We ate and kept the drinks aside. We needed to be sober to be helpful. Things moved swiftly and a lot was cramped into the reception so it's details would be bulky, I am leaving them out. Our Job mostly was to help those intending to spray money on the dancing couple get change for that purpose. I and James. We made quite a sum of money from it. Don't ask me how, we weren't stealing them tho, but we did make money.

We were far gone into the whole thing when I remembered Chinemelum. I searched around for her but couldn't find her then I remembered the kitchen. I left James as he stood at a spot, looking for potential customers who would like to change their money. Into the kitchen I went and there was my fair lady, watching and rinsing ceramic plates. Her mom was around and I couldn't possibly drag her out of there myself.

I stood at a distance from them for what seemed like 72 hours, hoping and praying she would look my way, then she did and our eyes smiled at each other. I nodded and pointed back inside, she seemed to understand my sign language and smiled at me, this time around with her lips and those her dimples knocked me out. I stood imagining those lips on mine. I believed it would taste like strawberry.

I ran back inside, into our room to wait for her. I passed the door, threw the curtain open and walked inside to meet our whole lodge there. Well it was just Shape, Willie and Chinecherem, James too. Willie was already on one bottle of Heineken and was grinning ear to ear at me. Shape was clutching his hand and smiling at me. The  the gate crasher, the party spoiler, Chinecherem. She ran straight at me with her open hands and landed straight on me.
"Baby!" she yelled as she hugged me deeply, destroying my cheeks with pecks. Just then, Chinemelum walked in, wiping her wet hands against her blouse.

Cold short story

The weather was gloomy from the rain that had fallen the previous night and the cold still sent it chills against the skin. Nancy sat on the chair with a kind of amusement watching Jaycee deal with the hairs that had crowded his chin in recent times.

"It's amazing how much hair one can grow in so little time," he muttered and slid the blade against his chin.
"I think you look good in it," Mary commented and kept on watching him like it was her ritual. She had loved him as a boy and still love him as he was growing into a man. He still had that boyish smile behind those mass of hairs and though he kept the hairs unkempt for a long time, it took nothing out of him nor out of the love Nancy had for him. He was her only family now and it went both ways. He had only her too and maybe Oscar.

"Do you think he will recognize me behind all these?" he asked, circling his beards with the shaving stick.
"Williams?" Nancy asked and he shot her a look and shook his head.
"No, August."
"Yes, you are still the silly old you plus beards," she replied and earned a smile from him, one she returned. He couldn't smile without drawing her into it. They had stayed back in shadows at St Mathews all the time, never intending for it to drag so long but it did and they couldn't help it. He brushed off excess hair from his face and walked to her. He stooped and faced her where she sat.
"How many years had it been? A hundred?" he smiled and creased his brow. "Still I can't get over that adoring look in your eyes, the one that have kept me going even when I just want to buckle up and die."

She smiled a beautiful smile, one that the years had added to her other pretty features and she did look very pretty. Her light blue eyes behind the long lashes made him weak with affection each time she cast them on him. She shut him up with her lips and he responded, falling back into the couch with her leading him in between her laps. The boyish expression, the smile in his eyes and lips, she could never get enough each time.

Oscar cleared his throat loudly and they stopped. They looked at him and he grinned.
"Sorry to interrupt but have got news."
August stood up and faced him, hands akimbo.
"Sup bro, why let the hairs go?" he asked, observing the trims he had done on the once bushy beard.
"Well, she said it got in between our kisses," he smiled at Nancy and she cast him a glance, one she always did whenever he lied on her head.
"Okay now, I said no such thing," she defended. " I kinda liked the beard though."
"So is my beard the news?" he asked.
"No bro, something much more important."
"I hope it is, for you to interrupt us. We were gunning for a baby of our own." he said with a grin, Nancy faked a cough.
"I'm hungry, that's it," he said and moved a few inches away from them, trailed by Jaycee's eyes.
"One wonders how you have managed to survive so long, I should have killed you already," August said and stood erect.
"Because you love me bro."
"I had better make breakfast," Nancy declared and got up from the couch. There was an air of approval between the two famished guys. She made her way out of the sitting room and Jaycee faced Oscar.

"Well?" he asked with a creased brow. Oscar shook his head.
"Couldn't reach him, his phone didn't go through."
"So?"
"Well, I don't know. Maybe we should give him sometime before we call him again."
"Well, I just felt I should remind him that he had a family here. Wouldn't like him to forget his folks."
He moved to the a chair and sat on it's arm. He looked up at Oscar.
"You know it's just me and him," he muttered.
"And Williams too," Oscar added.
"No, I am going to kill Williams. It would be just me and August, now, I can't even reach him."
Their worries seemed to fade temporarily away with the smell of Omelettes coming from the kitchen.

Williams lighted another Cigar and flicked the burnt match away. He dropped both his legs on the table and rotated sideways on the chair. He took occasional looks at the wall clock. Stanley was supposed to be there an hour earlier and he waited patiently. The time ticked 10:35 am and his door slid open. Stanley walked in, clad in heavy perfume and his neck rigged with shinning chains.

"You are late," Williams reminded him and dropped the cigar in the almost full ash tray.
"I know, been busy with the boss," he replied and moved over to a seat, opposite to the one Williams sat on.
"Cool, so what did he say, am I in?"
"Well, he'll be glad to have you in his team but you'll have to be patient," he paused and gauged Williams expression. He saw nothing, he just sat there, looking at him. "Well, see, he would like to evaluate you himself but then, he won't be around till next two weeks. That's when you will see him."
"Fine, just need to get busy. Been idle for a long while," he said and picked up his still burning cigar from the ash tray.
"Still got some cigar?" Stanley asked and heaved himself up, stretching his hand to take the packet he was handing over to him. He pulled a stick and lighted it, sticking it into his waiting mouth.

"Soon bro, we would have the whole of Georgian to ourselves with st Mathews as our foot stool. Very soon." Stanley declared dreamily and shut his eyes, biting at the cigar between his lips oblivious of the burning stare that William was lavishing him with.

He sat on the bed, examining the gun over and over again. He blinked hard to let the mist of tears clouding his eyes go down his cheeks. They were blocking his views. He rubbed the back of his hand his nose and sniffed. He dropped the gun on the bed and ran his hands through his head.

He could never stop thinking of her. In his mind, he traced out the string of blood that ran down the side of her mouth, her nose. The dead look in her eyes as she stared back at him, the once beautiful blue eyes, all pale and cold and lifeless. Her smooth skin, all white. The memories hurt him as he stood up and ran to the wall, punching away at it and not feeling the pain or the blood as they covered his knuckles.

"Mary!!" he yelled and fell to the floor, pulling at his hair and sobbing violently.
"I loved you, fuck I loved you and you had to go," he sobbed and sniffed severally.

Marcela watched him pace the room and noticed he looked out through the window once in a while, like he was expecting visitors. He rarely looked her way and when he did, he barely spent time on it. She tugged at the rope on her wrists and her efforts went futile. She wriggled and jumped against her restraints, the chair only moved few inches with her body still strapped tightly to it.

"Please stop, you are only going to wear yourself out," he murmured and took a seat facing her. Her eyes shot at him from where she was tied and he saw all the hatred she could never speak out in them.
"You have beautiful eyes, I love beautiful eyes," he said and moved closer to her, stooping and looking her straight in the eyes.
"She had a beautiful set eyes too, Mary. Your brother killed her and all that beauty. Wasted," he announced. She whimpered and cast him a pitiful look. He smiled and shook his head.
"You know her right? Mary?" he asked and she nodded.
"You know your brothers killed her right?"
She shook her head in the negative. He smiled again.
"Don't matter though. People have always paid for crimes they knew nothing about. Like Mary, killed just because of a little fight between your brother and the boy she loved."

He went back to the chair and sat on it. Caressing the glock he had laid on his laps. The door to the room opened and a boy came dragging a body inside. Their trailed mapped on the floor by the blood that was coming out of the body. Marcela made out her father's stature and shook where she was tied, making muffled shouts. She could only tell it was him by his short, stout frame. His head was one bloody, disfigured mass of flesh.

"He wouldn't die, had to club out his head," Chris explain and Garvey nodded. He imagined Chris having a go at the helpless man with a golf stick. He was a good golfer and always had his stick handy.

"Thanks for the help man," Garvey said and he grinned.
"Don't worry bro, been dreaming of this day for a very long time. Since the day the man slapped my mom and told my dad he can't do shit about it."
Garvey smiled and turned to face Marcella again whom her eyes was heavy with tears.

Victor heard the clock chime seven times and tried to open his eyes. He realized it wasn't easy. He tried again and it was impossible. He tried rubbing his eyes with his hands but they would never move. He pulled his hands with all his strength but nothing happened. He only felt the rope holding his wrists together. He realized he was also sitting and not lying on a bed.

Garvey pulled the blindfold from his eyes and smiled.
"Good morning," he greeted with a fixed smile, leaning to be on the same eye level with him. "I really have to admit that you sleep like a dead man. Worked the rope on you all night and you didn't even blink."
Victor tugged at his restraints, trying to make a dash for Garvey but was held down by them. The ropes were stronger than he was.
"Don't stress it bro, I have good enough experience with ropes, that comes from years of camping and making tents." he smiled again, he did that often, and stood erect. "Someone wanted to meet you if you woke up."
He moved to a seat at the corner and sat on it.

"You told me nobody was going to do shit about you killing us, that your father owned this town. You only care about yourself, about who you are and what your father is. You could have asked who I am, you could have asked who the fuck is August Donatti and you could have asked what would happen to you if you messed with someone I loved." August walked to his face and stood before him. He let him absorb the shock and surprise of seeing him stand there, alive. He moved closer to him on the chair he was tied to and tore off the mouth gag.
"You took something from me. Something I cherished so much. You took a family from me and now, yours are going to pay dearly for it."

"Matt's back bro," Garvey said, looking through the window.
"Well unlock the door, he should be able to just walk in."
Garvey walked to the parlor and pulled the bolt to the front door open.

Victor cast August a pleading eye and whispered an inaudible word.
"I can't hear you," August whispered and stooped.
"Please," he repeated faintly and August smiled.
"I watched you helplessly that day, I begged you to leave her out of it. I said 'Please leave her out of it'. Now it's your turn to watch me murder everyone you love and feel so helpless about it all."

Matt walked in slowly, followed closely by Garvey, the glock glistening in his hand. He stopped when his eyes met August's. He let his mouth drop and switched gazes between his tied brother and August.
"You two shouldn't have let me live," August said.
"We can settle this man," Victor muttered and pleaded with his eyes. August gave him a side look, one that sent the chills down his spine.
"What did you say fool?" he asked.
"We can settle this, as boys always do," he repeated slowly, aiming not to displease him. August walked to where he sat and sent him crashing to the ground with a fierce kick to the chest. The chair to which he was strapped crashed from impact and he rolled to the side.

"We will settle it, not like boys do but my own way."
Chris walked in on them, pushing Marcella before him, her hands tied behind her and her mouth gagged. Her face was a swollen from crying.
"No, August not her. She had nothing to do with this," Matt pleaded.
"Yes, Mary had nothing with it, Jeane too and Harry, they were freaking innocent too," he replied coldly and raised his gun, pointing it at Marcella. He didn't think twice about it. He squeezed the trigger, twice. She fell long before the gunshots died down. Matt dashed at him with furry and he caught him on the left leg with one shot. He tripped to the ground and held his ankle, from where the blood sputtered out.

"I would have just shot you but you wouldn't feel the pain that I have felt. I want you both to absorb it, all the pains I went through and the ones still ahead cos I will never ever forget what you took from me," he stopped and sniffed, his eyes moistened as he stared at the two brothers on the floor. "I am going to give you the chance that you never gave me."

He pointed his gun at Matt's unharmed right leg and pulled the trigger again. He yelled from pain, almost covering the sound of gunshots that followed. Victor lay flat on the ground, dizzy with excruciating pain biting at him from where August had shot him in the leg.
"I am going to set this house on fire and you have little time to make it out. Good luck and your time starts now."

"Just so you know bro, Matt called me that night, after they had shot you. I wouldn't have been able to save you if he didn't tell me, " Garvey informed him as they walked out.
"A mistake he made. He shouldn't have let me live. If not for them, Mary would still be alive, Harry Jeane too."
They walked out of the already smoking building, the clattering fire rising above the wailings of Matt and Victor. From afar, everyone watched the building burn, waiting on the firemen. August watched with watery eyes, battling with the thought of the night he had watched his family wiped out. He became conscious all of a sudden, of the duty he owed to his dead family, Jaycee, Maria, Joseph. He kept replaying that conversation in his mind.

"Remember who took your brothers from you," Oscar's voice kept replaying his head. His lips quivered severally and from it, he was able to for two words, a name.
"Jaime Rodneck," he whispered with the fire in his eyes.

She wrote me tons of love texts and I wrote her tons of replies. She was falling in love with me and was dragging me along. I started doing the things that I once hated and that was dating a girl in secret. I would normally want my guys to know that I had caught this fine chic and she was blowing my brains out. That was for many other affairs but on this particular one. I had gone against every single ethic. Not that James really cared much about her but he may still be thinking her as his girl. Shape would simply poison Me if she found out. And me sef was loving the girl more than I should and our affair was something beyond just fuckery. I had to confess that for a while there I seemed to have forgotten my pregnant love and was starting to lose interest.

In my life, I had always wanted only few things in a girl. She gats to be beautiful, hot and curvy and she must always be around me. Chinecherem scored all that point and that was just all I needed. Chinaza had something above her though. She was light skinned and I love light skin girls like a fat kid loves cake.

So James's sister was going to be married and he was inviting us. It wasn't actually an invitation, he was insisting we all come, especially me.

"At least, if nothing else, you can help me pound cassava," he had said as he was listing out a thousand reasons why I shouldn't miss the traditional marriage.
"Will they make egusi soup?" Chinecherem had asked with excitement. After loving me, the next thing she loves is food but I guess y'all already know that.
"Go home and show your daddy your Jamb result," Shape had chided her. I stifled a laugh and she kept quiet. Her jamb result had this way of keeping her quiet.
"But guy, your village is far shaa," I said.
"Are you trekking, no be car you go follow come?'
"And who go pay?"
"Williams baby can take us in your mother's car naa," shape chipped in.

So that was the end of the conversation. We managed to coarse mom out of her car. The crew for the marriage was I, shape and Williams. Chinaza was pregnant and I wouldn't want her to take the long trip plus she never actually liked the idea of traveling that far. Shape had insisted that Chinecherem go home. Jamb was over already and her parents had been hotline blinging shape over her. I liked the decision tho, even though I realized I was falling in love with her, I didn't need her to mess up any prospect I had of hooking my self up with an Ebonyi chic. Shape was dragging Willie along unwillingly but he accepted tho. He could do anything for a good booty.

I and James actually set out the day before the actual day. He wanted to show me around and help him out whenever he needed it. We left around 6 am. The trip from the bus park to hometown was straight boring. We were sandwiched between two other guys. The one beside me was busy sleeping and passing it onto us and the other guy was speaking Queens English into his phone at every interval, lying to whoever it was that was on the other side of his phone that he was on his way to South Africa. At a point, I had to start asking if we had boarded the wrong bus.
The only breath of fresh air in the bus, two fine daughter's of eve that I would have so much loved to be cranked in between them were way far up at the front seat, being entertained by the driver with his boasts of haven once driven Barack Obama in the white house. Those girls were beautiful but looked very dull so I think they actually believed him.

We drove into ebonyi by 3pm. Another 30 minutes on an okada brought us to James's house. It wasn't actually the enclave I had expected to see. They had a very nice bungalow to themselves, freshly painted in brown color. The whole house was swarming with workers, designing and cooking. I strapped my bag and shaped my face very well. I needed to wow any chic that might bump into us.

"Chibundu!!" I heard someone scream and turned to look. A young lady was running towards us, her boobs running before her while she followed closely behind. She came right at us and dropped a hot hug on James. I was expecting her to give me mine but nothing of the sort happened. She examined him properly and hugged him again. Then he introduced me to her and her to me. Chinenye was her name, his elder sister and the reason we had come. James is my friend but I am not going to lie, I am too old to tell petty lies. The truth was that James was actually better looking than his sister, Chinenye. She had that curve factor, interesting set of boobs and an enticing backside but then, James had a better face.

We walked into the house. The interior was tasty and impressive. We met his mother in the sitting room. She was one sweet little woman, her face a carbon copy of Chinenye's. She hugged her son and shook my hand. She was sweet and happy. That settled the difference between James and Chinenye's difference in looks. I assumed James got his good looks from his father then. We went to his room. He had done a very good work on it. Nice paint work. A large enough flat screen and a sturdy mattress, lying on a fluffy red rug.

"James how come?" I asked, pulling my pencil gean trouser from his wardrobe. He grinned cheek to cheek.
"I forgot it during the holidays."
"Ah ah, and you were even helping me search for it back at our lodge. Nawa to you o."

Shaa we unpacked and I pulled out my shoes, sliding into my comfortable slippers. We waltzed out to see the rest of the place. We ran into his father at the backyard. He was overseeing the slaughter of a goat. He was a few inches taller than his wife and had a dark strong face, the type of face you would see on a carved woodwork. Maybe he was a bit finer when he was younger but I happen to miss its reflection on his face.  Another hug and introduction followed. He shook me strongly and he was really jovial. That added a little glow to his face.

"James, is like your village people no dy like fine," I said after his father had left and he eyed me.
"Waka."
I laughed. Just when I was trying to summarize my points to him, a rainbow crawled out of that cloud of a village. This beautiful foxy girl just walked through the house to where we stood. She was all heavy with endowments, she let her cleavage pop out from the top of her blouse and they were fresh. She had dimples, a nice set of smiles and her walk was so out of that village, in fact it was out of this world and she was fair!!!

She walked straight to us and dropped all that sauce on James. I stared wide eyed.

"Guy meet my little sister, Chinemelum," James said. She threw me a stupefying smile and I caught it. I went for a hug too and she obliged. I held onto her long enough for James to break us. She excused herself and I turned to James.
"Did your mom play away match?" I asked. He gave me a shove as we ran out through the gate that led into the house. The sun was setting already. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and welcomed my self to the city of Ebonyi, The salt of the nation.

I was waiting gleefully to hear what Willie had to say about shape being pregnant but then Willie was just Willie. One carefree guy with not a care in the world. He is only worried when two things happen to him. He is broke and he has no pussy to ram.

"What did she vomit? An antelope?" he had asked when I told him about shape vomiting everything she had eaten since her mother birthed her.
"Why won't she vomit when she kept drinking the water from our hostel well after I had told her to use pure water."

And that solved it. The chic was only sick from drinking well water which was infected with a dead dog. The dog had decayed inside it and many other people who drank the water like shape were either wooing chemists or having a field day in their various toilets.

Shape had never been so relieved in her entire life, she actually preferred drinking a decayed dog infested water to being pregnant, well, who wouldn't.
She decided she needed some break, to calm her frayed nerves and guess where she was going to calm the nerves. Well, Willie was more than willing to help her calm those nerves.

So it was back to being me and James in the lodge with Chinecherem in between us. She was glowing and I couldn't keep my eyes off her. I tried to shaa but she had this way of making me not to. She was rather getting on James nerves with her talkativeness. He complained that she even talked in between kisses. That was her only flaw. She was smart too and intelligent to an average. At least she wrote her jamb without help and scored 149. It was her first jamb by the way. Her Jamb result was one of the reasons she had refused to go home earlier. Her friends would laugh her to stupor for her score, she had bragged about how she would trash jamb and maybe score 450 over 400. You know as she is mouthed.

School was getting a sort of dry lately. I think everyone was getting tired of being students, just like me. Only that there were no much babes to party with. Only the nerdy ones. James was on his away match things, leaving me and Chinecherem. She kept talking me into anger and talking me out of it. In the end, you can't just help but sit down and listen. At least, the whole place was lively with her there.

So on one sunny Tuesday like that, Shape wasn't back from calming her nerves yet and James was out with a girl he had just met. It was just me around, lying on my bed and basking in the euphoria of loneliness and boredom. Staring at the ceiling and counting from 1 to 100 and back and hoping nepa would bring light at the count of 50 or 60 or 70 or 100. Just then, Chinecherem came back from where she had gone to eat down a guy that had just hooked her up. She came in, chewing loudly at her gum and humming into my bored ears. I was glad she came back, I needed a bit of her noise.
she was on a pink gown and black sneakers. Her ass shot out of her back in a way that would make you want to rock her and her boobs were ripe for plucking.
She came in clutching a black bulky waterproof. She dropped it on the table and sat beside me on the bed.

"How are you?" she asked me and I nodded a fine. She rubbed my bare chest and smiled. I wished she would just seduce me because I was too weak to initiate a foreplay plus I was scared she was a virgin.
"I am hungry," she announced, looking round the whole room.
"I thought someone took you out."
She hissed and lay beside me, rubbing her body against mine.
"Just one shawama and the guy was doing face like he wants to cry."
"So you ate shawama and you came back here to say you are hungry?"
"It wasn't enough naa and I really want to eat indomie," she sang out and I hissed.
"Well, I bought you yogurt," she announced and I smiled for the first time that day. She ran to the table and came back with the black waterproof. She refused to hand it over, insisting that I take the first sip from her hand. Well I did and she poured the stuff all over my mouth. I was going to lick it up myself if she hadn't kissed me and did it herself. I watched her with surprise, it was the first time she was doing that.

We stared at each other for a long while. She had a smile on her face and I had a frown on mine.
"What?" she asked.
"What did you do?"
"I only licked the yogurt."
"I pray so, don't lick it again, I have a big tongue."

We got back to drinking the yogurt, taking a sip after each other and when it finished. Our romance too ended.

"Why don't you like me?" she asked all of a sudden.
"Who said I don't like you?"
"I know you like me but it's not that type that I mean," she said and smiled shyly.
"What type?" I asked.
"Love. The type that."
I watched her and shook my head.
"Do you know that pregnant girl,  Chinaza?" I asked her and she nodded.
"She will just kill you if she finds out that you are trying to chyke me, ask shape about her."
She replied me in a way that I wasn't expecting. She threw herself into my hands and got on with licking the rest of the yogurt on my mouth. Funny thing was I actually let her do it. I too engaged myself in licking off hers. We kissed for a long time before we stopped. I was aroused already. I tore down her zipper and she crawled out of the gown, standing before me, clad only in her bra and pant. Her figure firm and her boobs robust. She was what we called the tip of a fresh pumpkin leaf. Not much tapped.

"Are you a virgin?" I asked before hand and she shook her head with a giggle.
"Then so help you God," I murmured and pulled her closer by the cup of her bra. She fell into my hands one more time and we got into another deep French kiss. She dug her hand into my boxer and grabbed my rock hard tool, moaning softly as she felt its ferocity. My hand crawled down to her panties and skid into her clean shaven pussy. I tugged her clit in between my two fingers and she moaned with mad ecstasy, hugging me tightly and trying to bite out my tongue. We fell on the bed, into deeper foreplay as she shut her eyes through it all. Her beauty was animate as we rocked each other deeper into the ocean of passion only at the brink of getting ourselves into the main ish.

I finally drew down her pants and let it drop to the floor, her shoes followed suit and I mounted her. She raised her legs, strapping them to her belly with her two hands to show me the sweet little hole that have destroyed many men. It was shooting out fluids as I slid my tool in, watching her shake with sensation and biting her lips softly. I dived in deeper, holding her legs to her body and moving in slowly, slowly and then faster and harder as she asked for it. She wrapped her legs round my neck and kissed me multiple times as we were at it.
"I love you so much," she murmured and I smiled. Pillow talks. I thought it was only exclusive to guys. I rammed her harder and she kept moaning my name softly, trying to choke me with her legs, but then, the sweet pleasure only made.. the pain more desirable. I brought down her legs and turned her over. She was petite in a way and it made her flexible. I tried her butt hole but it was still tight and I didn't have the time to break it. I went into the easier hole and continued where we stopped. She was already asking for more and I thought she loved only food.

So it was Chinecherem on Chinecherem as we drove each other to madness. I went from being above her to under her as she rode me like a cowgirl, her boobs jingling along to the ride. The bed was all wet with our sweat. She bent low while she rode me and kissed me, holding my mouth for long and shaking with passion.

"I love you, the first time I saw you, I fell in love with you and I did know how to tell you and you treat me like a baby and.... " she confessed, being her talkative sef.
"Neche, stop talking," I hushed her and she stopped. Her moans was enough noise. Seconds after the silence, she came along with me, spilling the jizz all over my thigh and me, shooting mine up her pussy. She kissed me warmly and long enough for the both of us to be tired of it.

She kept dancing all over me as we cleaned up the whole place. She even wanted a bath together but then, I didn't want it.
"You can only see my dick when I am fucking you." was what I told her and she didn't argue.

Shape came back that same day. Her nerves seemed all calmed as she was looking fresh and happy. Chinecherem couldn't keep away from me for a very long time. I realized that her confession of love weren't just pillow talks after all. She loved me and before she went to bed that day. She texted it to me.

"Before I think of anything or anyone else, I would always think of you first. I love you so much my bear."

I read it with a smile on my face. I loved what she called me. "bear". In the end I texted her back.

"I love you too baby bear."

Funny thing was that I actually meant it. Interesting days ahead I tell ya.

Shape was a very sexy girl. I believe I have mentioned that here many a time. You can never over exaggerate her sexiness. Everything she did was as sexy AF, the way she talked, her smile, her cat walk. But as of recent, she seemed to have developed a very unsexy trait. Just one and it wasn't until she came back from that honeymoon with Willie that it all started. She is always spitting around and it wasn't attractive at all.

At first, I ignored it until that Jambite talkative talked to me about it.

"Ehm, Neche, are you aware that Chinaza is always spitting around?" She asked me, hovering over me and my plate of rice like an evil spirit. I boned and focused my attention on my food. She liked food too and is always sharing mine. She will say, "after all, you are my namesake, if you don't take care of me, who will." and is only in matters of sharing food that she remembers that we share the same name but when it comes to the other one, well shaa.

"So what?" I asked her, stuffing my mouth with half of the meat in the food. I thought I saw her eye me.
"Well, just last night, she vomited and.. "
I hushed her. She was going to ruin my appetite with the unsavory tale.
"Chinecherem, I am eating abeg."
" I know but what I am saying is that she wasn't doing all those things until she visited your brother," She continued.
"So you are saying Willie taught her how to spit everywhere?"
"No, you remember in Nigeria movies, when a woman starts vomiting? She said and eyed me suggestively.
"Then she is pregnant," I completed it for her. She seemed to be making sense for the first time and I dropped my spoon.
"Where is shape?" I asked.
"In our room."

I got up from my chair and eyed her, then eyed my food.
"Don't touch it."
"I swear I won't."
"I am serious."
"I won't touch it. Go and see her."

I left her to guard over my food. Goat and Yam. I got to shape's room and met her lying on the bed looking as shapy as ever, only that her face wasn't so bright.
"Baby," I called softly and sat beside her on the bed.
"Sweetheart," she replied. I touched her head and it was a bit hot.
"Neche told me you were vomiting last night."
"Yes, I'm not feeling too well," she said weekly.
"How is it doing you?"
"Slight headache, body pain, nauseous and my stomach too," she listed out.
"Ah ah, only you?"
"Yes o," she said.
"When did it start?"
"I started noticing slightly while I was with Williams baby, but it was just a slight headache back then, now even my waist is paining me."
My jaw dropped, I looked at that waist and shook my head. It's massive size made me wonder why it won't pain but eventually, I thought, Willie has banged this girl into pregnancy. My father would just insist that he marry her.

"Do you think you are?" I asked suggestively and she eyed me.
"That I am what?"
"You know naa," I repeated, rubbing my stomach.
"Pregnant?" she blurted out and I nodded.
"Nooo," she said and shook her head vigorously, with some sort of confidence.
"How would you know that you are not?"
"I don't know, I cannot be pregnant now, not now abeg."

An Idea struck my head and I picked up my phone, dialed Chinaza's number and put it on loud speaker. It rang 3 times before she picked.
"Hello," she sang into the phone.
"Baby how are you?" I asked and she replied fine. Her voice showed she was fine, she was sounding really sweet.
"And the baby?" I added.
"He is trying to strangle himself with my umbilical cord. He has been disturbing me since morning."
"Ehyaa, sorry sweetheart, I wish I could help you carry her," I replied, placing my emphasis on the HER. She wanted a boy and I wanted a girl. I loved girls.
"It's a he dear and I wish you could help me carry him too, you only know how to get me pregnant," she replied stressing the he. I wasn't in the mood for an argument and it's my airtime that would burn. So I went straight to why I called her.

"Chinaza, what signs were you getting before you went for a pregnancy test?"
"How?" she asked.
"I mean, how was your body doing you before you realized you were pregnant?"
"Why are you asking? Are you pregnant or did you get another girl pregnant?"
"What do you mean? How can I be pregnant?"
"I don't know o. You had better be pregnant because if it's another girl that is pregnant for you, I will  strangle you and whoever the silly girl is."
"Jeez. Baby relax," Shape intervened.
"Chinaza?" She called and shape answered.
"It's me that wants to know about the pregnancy stuff," shape said and Chinaza went cool.
"Okay, I thought that silly boy has done it again."
"No, he can't, not when I am here," shape replied and eyed me. It was none of my concern, my only concern was that my airtime was burning.
"Okay, so it just started with a slight headache," she started and shape paid rapt attention. "Then, I vomited once I think and I was always feeling dizzy." I thought I saw shapes eyes bulge and I stifled a laughter. "And I think a part of my breast was paining me," Chinaza finished and I saw the blood drain from shapes eyes.  She was almost crying.
"Naza stop, thank you," I managed to say and switched off my phone before that damn MTN girl will start warning me about my airtime.

I shook my head pitifully at her as her eyes moistened. She kept repeating 'Willie has killed me'. Before it was Williams baby but now she pronounced his name in the old fashioned way my mother would call him, 'WILLIE'.

I'm not very good at consoling girls especially beautiful ones like Shape, I was only good at romancing them and at that point in time, I didn't think it would be of any help. I had to leave her to mourn herself and left for my room. I met my room empty and my plate that once had a sizable portion of rice and stew with a good chunk of meat was lying very neat in my basket, shining and dripping with the water that must have been used to wash it.

I had always told Chinecherem that someday, very soon, I am going to rape her to death but she thinks I am joking.

Just one day.

She just stood there looking so elegant. The pregnancy removed nothing from her beauty, it rather added a sort of sexy appeal to her radiant skin and made her saucy. Chinaza was just on fleek as she stood at my door that day but then, I would have loved to have me some Chinecherem.

She gave Chinecherem that look she normally gives me each time she gives me a head and I refuse to return the favor. Very deadly look.

"Who is she?" she asked, it was actually her first word on entering my room. Her eyes was roving from Chinecherem to me.
"Aunty don't you remember me?" Chinecherem asked. I assumed the Aunty calmed her. She sized her up again and shook her head.
"She is shape's sister," I added.
"Who is shape?" Chinaza asked, facing me.
"Who else do you know that I know that has the potentials to be called shape?"
"Oh okay, Chinaza? You are Chinecherem right?" she asked, facing her. She nodded and that ended it. I don't think it stopped her from suspecting that I may have an extra friendly business with her.
Chinaza walked up to me on the bed and made a sit out of my laps. I didn't mind cos her ass was all soft and cosy only that she developed a little bit of weight.

James was already colonizing Chinecherem with immediate alacrity and I was just fuming. Chinaza doesn't know when she is needed. I would have told her but I doubt if was a good idea. But then, whatever, Chinaza even looked better than her, I am not hating shaa. But then, there is something about all these new Secondary school graduates that adds the veins to my preek.

Shaa shaa, things fell into place, slowly. Chinaza in my arms complaining endlessly about waist pain and wanting to go out and relax. James sweet talking Chinecherem and she looking endlessly at me and Chinaza. Something was telling me that she envied Chinaza's position and may want to make a switch and I would have loved that. At least, her maths tutorial didn't seem like it would happen which was better for me, I had lost touch with the mathematical side of me and James love for mathematics was inversely proportional with my love for fine girls.

"Did you cook?" Shape asked and Chinecherem scoffed. Even Chinaza was smiling mischievously. She obviously knew that cooking for me was next to reading my books without any upcoming exam or quiz in my list of impossibility.
"I'm hungry," she said after getting that fuck you look from me.
"What do you want to eat?" I asked, rubbing at her tummy and having her smile up at me.
"Food."
"Lemme buy indomie," I said, trying to move her away from me. She refused and shook her head.
"What is indomie, is that what the baby will use and be Strong?"
"What do you want naa?"
"Take me out," she snapped and my head cracked like a coconut.
"I know a restaurant around here that sells cheap and interesting food," Chinecherem Chipped in.
"Yes, and they have the right food for pregnant women," James supplemented her. I shot them two live bullets with my eyes and frowned. Chinecherem was smiling sheepishly, I wondered what gave that small girl the right to talk among men. James was giving me that his wicked grin. I hissed.

"When married men are talking, bachelors and spinsters should mind their business," I said and everyone laughed, except me, it was my Pocket money that they are trying to divide into three after all.
"Baby please," Chinaza begged with a look that would make you buy her the whole of Mr Biggs but then, I don't even have the money to buy her a mama put.
"I don't have money," I begged back. She didn't believe me.
"Baby, please," she continued.
"I don't have money," I repeated.
"Please."
"Money."
"So I and the baby should remain hungry naa," she snapped.
"But I offered to cook indomie."
"It's not good for the baby abeg, he needs solid food."
"Is the baby complaining?" I asked. She eyed me angrily, I don't know if she was serious with the anger or she was just pretending but she was still lying on my body so I assumed the anger wasn't serious.

"Maybe we should go to the woman outside the gate, she even have 100 naira a plate food," Chinecherem continued with her suggestions while Naza kept nodding.
"100 naira food won't do us naa," James added and Chinaza nodded again.
"We? as in, who are the we?" I asked, gathering as many frowns as my face would allow me.
"Us, all of us. We are hungry too," Chinecherem answered.
"Do you see any breast on me?" I asked and she shook her head, a good deal of confusion registered on her beautiful face.
"Why do you ask?" she asked me.
"Well, is like you are mistaking me for your mother."
Again, everyone laughed except me. Then like a storm, Shape breezed in, dragging her ass in and Willie behind her ass.

"Hey, the latest couple in town, Welcome," Chinecherem clapped. Everyone kept quiet and turned to her. The surprise was on everyone's face.
"Ar ar, I know these two guys don't smoke and no one in this lodge smokes so I am wondering who gave you the weed that is pushing you like this," Shape asked.
"Ask her o," James said. Me, I was just looking, how can someone be so mouthed. She hadn't even been up to 3 weeks around and she's already sweet on everybody, even Willie that she just met. A very naughty side of me saw in a vision, a 3some involving me and James hovering over her head like the holy spirit.

"Is she that your cousin?" Willie asked shape and she nodded.
"She is fine shaa," he murdered and scratched his side burns. James coughed. Chinaza charged up.
"See Willie, something is bordering us here," she said and Willie turned to her.
"What is bothering our wife?"
"We are hungry," she replied, waving at all of us. We nodded. Willie was willing to impress and in no time, My door was closed and we were on our way out, like an extended family. Each to his company. Chinaza was willing to show everyone around that her pregnancy was mine. James and Chinecherem, well, Shape ensured he kept an accurate 9 inches distance from each other but that didn't stop my niggar from massaging her booty from time to time.

We ended up at a restaurant. We and ate and we made merry, the boys drank and got drunk and the girls accumulated bills on Willie's head but that money for his graduation tuxedo seemed not be finishing. Shape took a sip of Willie's drink and let her tongue loose.

She revealed in her drunken state, some things that was between her and Naza. Apparently, she had asked Naza to come and keep an eye on us and her cousin. She trusted James a bit, it was with me that her suspicions lay. Obviously I needed to work on my reputation. Even shape is hiding her sister from me. Hmmmm.
